As preparations for RHS Chelsea Flower Show ramp up, one of the most crucial behind-the-scenes operations has already taken place: sourcing quality trees and growing perennials  for show gardens.

“The process usually starts around June or July,” says Michael. “Designers approach us with ideas, and we advise on tree availability, and any risks that may be associated with the initial list – especially for trees that come into leaf later in the season. By August and September, detailed tree lists are received. Creepers then taps into its long-established European and UK network to check stock availability, costs, and source current imagery. This expert procurement process allows the team to identify the best quality trees available.

Once a refined list is agreed, with imagery shared, designers and Creepers often travel to specialist nurseries across Europe to tag trees in person – a process that frequently opens up new creative directions. “Whilst on these trips, designers might spot a tree with a different habit or a striking multi-stem and that can shift the designers thought process and tree positioning’’, says Michael.

After selections are confirmed, the trees are secured with the growers. Creepers coordinates purchasing and importation, ensuring full compliance with biosecurity protocols are followed at all times. Upon arrival at Creepers’ Addlestone site, trees are visually inspected by the operations team, stood up, irrigated, and monitored through bi-weekly health checks.

When Chelsea build arrives, trees are carefully prepared, transported, and delivered to the show, ready to take their place in world-class gardens.
